Counting Coils
Count along the spring in complete revolutions. Each complete revolution is considered one full coil. If the spring does not end on a full coil, as in the figure on the left, the remainder can be expressed as a fraction of a coil. Adding the fraction of coil to the number of full coils counted gives the total number of coils, 5.5 in the example
Right Hand Wind vs. Left Hand Wind
If the index finger of the right hand can be bent to simulate dirction of coil, so that the fingernail and coil tip are approximately at the same angular position, the spring is right-hand wound, as depicted in the right pane of the figure below. If the index finger of the left hand simulates the coil direction, the spring is left-hand wound, as shown in the left pane of the figure below. If direction of coiling is not critical, optional winding should be specified.
